Gold Leaf Flake

Gold leaf is prepared from gold that has tiny quantities of silver and copper added together. It becomes thinner and thinner under a repetitive procedure. Real yellow gold leaf is approximately 92% pure gold. Silver colored white gold is around 50% pure gold. Gold leaf is used for gilding furniture, frames, and plaster. It's also used for gold lettering and other types of decoration.

A book of patent gold leaf is gathered by positioning each unit of gold leaf and tissue between pieces of thin rouged paper. The gilder can then take away one . Some gold leaf is prepared in double thickness, and is considered to be the equivalent of pre-19th century leaf, as old writings and handling instructions indicate a less fragile and more easily controlled metal than the modern day product. Double thick leaf is particularly useful when gilding the edges of books, as it establishes a firmer effect than is obtainable by using gold leaf of the usual thickness. The cost of the gold leaf is small in comparison to the measure of time required to develop a piece for gilding. In recent years, new products have entered the market thus greatly cutting down the preparation time.

Gold is rare, long-lasting and doesn't wear out in the manner of lesser metals (or paper!) when passed from hand to hand. A small quantity, easily carried, can buy a substantial amount of these goods and services. Metal Flakes gives an altogether different effect than traditional leaf. It comes in gold, silver, copper, and variegated. Because of the softness of pure (24k) gold, it's typically alloyed with base metals for use in jewelry, changing its hardness and ductility, melting point, color and other attributes. Alloys with less caratage, typically 22k, 18k, 14k or 10k, carry higher portions of copper, or other base metals or silver or palladium in the alloy.

Gold leaf is fabricated specifically in the colors and weights that have become the standards in the industry. Gold leaf is gold that's pounded into super thin sheets. The thin gold sheets are typically used for gilding.
